Nightly Nursing – Mommin’ Series

The house is dark with only 1 lamp on. I’m half asleep, stumbling through, all the way to the other end of the house to get my upset kiddo. I pick him up out of his crib and we head into the living where I sit in the rocking chair and nurse him. Sometimes I sit and watch him nurse, other times, I accidentally doze back off while we’re rocking in the chair. I have done this same routine since the day we brought him home from the hospital. Nightly nursing, is our time. No one else can do it for me. Everyone else in the house is asleep, except him and me.

From the time Daylan was a newborn, I longed for the day that he would sleep through the night. I mean, who actually likes getting up 3 times in the middle of the night?? I didn’t. Well, I didn’t think I liked it…until now that’s it’s coming to an end.

He’s been waking up less and less to eat or get cuddles in the middle of the night. It’s bittersweet, really. It’s great because that means Mama gets her sleep back but it’s also heartbreaking because that just means my little baby is growing up. He no longer wakes up at 1 in the morning (except last night. It must have been something in the air) wanting mommy. He now sleeps 10 hours before he’s ready to eat again and go back to sleep. I know, too soon, he’ll be skipping that feeding too.

So last night, I decided to document the end of an era. Corey rolled his eyes and looked at me like I was crazy while I was setting my camera up on the TV stand before I went to bed. I prayed the cat wouldn’t knock it off during the night. I went ahead and set everything up so I wouldn’t have to while I had a screaming, hungry child.

When Daylan woke up a little after midnight (that is RARE), instead of getting frustrated, I got excited because my baby wanted his mommy. FYI, he had a belly ache or something because he ended up in bed with me all night and I ain’t complaining!

So here it is, our nightly nursing coming to an end. And while I am proud of my boy for sleeping so good, I am also sad.

Mom’s to little babies, enjoy your babies waking up in the middle of the night because if you’re anything like me, you’ll miss it. It goes by way too quickly.
